Following the traditional Coast Salish concept of uy'sqwalawun, meaning one's heart and mind are in harmony, we offer safe and structured opportunities outside of school hours for youth at-risk to come together with each other and healthy adult mentors. The intention is to foster connection to a way of being that will enable our youth to cope with life's challenges and seek wellness. This takes place through athletic, musical, and artistic learning opportunities provided in partnership with key community members. At times offered outside of school hours, youth can gather, share food, learn from adult mentors with lived experiences, and explore their own personal identities.

Join us this July and August at the Learning Alternatives Summer Program. This program is a safe space that will be open to all grades 8-12 students in Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools. Each day will have two Learning Alternatives teachers leading some fun activities in the gym and cafeteria at Woodlands. There will also be food provided for all in attendance.

  • Where: Learning Alternatives/Woodlands Secondary School 1270 Strathmore Street Please use the cafeteria entrance off Strathmore St. (by the carving)
  • When: Tuesday–Thursday 9:30am–4:00pm July 9th to August 29th
  • Please email Brett at bhancock@sd68.bc.ca with any questions or to secure a spot.

All youth are welcome no matter your enrollment history.
