The Nanaimo Hornets and the sport of rugby have a long-standing history of providing a pro-social environment for youth to experience the camaraderie of a game that more than any other aspires to the highest values of sport; honour, commitment, team-work. The Hornets provide family-like environment for everyone from the age of 3 – 83. And as the senior members were once mentored by those that came before them, so too today we have senior men and women (both current and former players) who provide mentorship to the youth within the club who may need support to ensure that they have a safe place, feel welcome and valued. The youth program also supports life skills development like cooking classes; coach training and leadership opportunities and promotes the concept of ‘giving back’ to the community through involvement in RugbyWorks community clean-up events, summer jobs and education support.

The program is research-based, drawing on the Canadian 'Long Term Development' model that simply states when kids develop FUNdamental Movement Skills, they can participate in any activity and become healthier by being ‘Active for Life’. We encourage multi-sport participation. We have adopted club delivery ‘best practices’ as outlined in the Sport for Life document; "Quality Sport for Communities and Clubs" that emphasizes good programs, good people & good places. We aspire to be the Gold Standard for community sport delivery in Nanaimo.

Our rapid growth since reviving the program post-COVID, indicates we are achieving our goal of providing quality programming in a safe environment that is affordable for all.

Join us! Every Thursday at 6:30 pm for drop-in rugby. It's free to play and runs throughout the whole summer!
