Youth Lounge
The Youth Lounge is a free program for youth between the ages of 11 - 18 years old, offered in partnership with the BGC of Central Vancouver Island. It runs September to June, on Thursdays from 3 - 7 pm, and Fridays from 2 - 9 pm at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. The Youth Lounge provides opportunities to spend time with friends, make new friends, play games, find a quiet space to work independently, and engage with others in a fun, inclusive, supervised space. The Youth Lounge offers a variety of free activities such as swimming, skating, table tennis, video games, homework support, pizza nights and much more. Amenities include: wi-fi, charging stations, snacks, music, comfortable seating, board games, movies, PS5, virtual reality, and more. Youth are welcome to come for part of or all the program time and the flexibility allows for connection and support around the youth’s availability and level of commitment.
Recreation Prescription
(The program will launch Fall 2024 and run for 8 weeks in the Fall and 8 weeks in Winter 2025.)
Recreation Prescription is a collaborative partnership between the City of Nanaimo, Vancouver Island University (VIU) and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools to promote health and wellbeing to grade 5 and 6 students. The project incorporates knowledge from previous physician prescribed mental health, social connectedness and physical activity. The project is grounded in five goals from the nationally recognized Framework for Recreation in Canada; Active Living, Inclusion and Access, Connecting People and Nature, Supporting Environments and Recreation Activities. These goals have strong links the six projects areas outlined in the Nanaimo Youth Resilience Strategy.
Recreation Prescription will run two, 8 week sessions in selected local elementary schools for grade 5 and 6 students targeting youth at risk as identified in the Nanaimo Youth Resilience Strategy. Program participants will participate in a wide variety of activities in the areas of sports, recreation, culture, active transportation and nature based learning. These activities will be facilitated by an interdisciplinary team made up of students from the Child and Youth Care, Recreation and Tourism, Sports and Physical Education faculties from Vancouver Island University.
