Nanaimo Cycling Map App
Introducing The Nanaimo Cycling Map App, your “one stop shop” for getting around Nanaimo by bike.
This new Nanaimo cycling map is now live, just in time for the fall GoByBike event. It is currently being used to mark the places in the local GoByBike Pedal to Places Challenge happening September 27-October 10, 2021!
The map is also useful when putting together your routes to and from school, work, programs, the grocery store and more! You can share photos of how you incorporate cycling into your daily routine to win local prizes. Learn more about the Pack N Pedal Challenge.
Learn more about this map:
- Cycling routes are categorized by type
- Click through additional layers, including signed bike routes (those without improvements) and all trails
- Base map options (choose an air photo or different colour scheme for the background)
- It can pin places for events like the GoByBike Pedal to Places Challenge!

Suggest safe crossing areas for major intersections
Sometimes you have to be on a busy road, but on a map there’s no obvious “best way” to know how to cross a major road. For instance, heading westbound on Hammond Bay crossing the old island highway, you either try and draft off of cars to catch the light as there is no way to trigger the signal by yourself (or is there? This would be handy to indicate in the map!) or you have to get off your bike and wait as a pedestrian. It would be nice to know which lights are triggerable by a bike in the sensor part, and which ones at major intersections can only be triggered by a car weight.

I don't know what the difference is between some of the bike facility types. Would be helpful for planning a bike ride.

Suggest bike routes for safe cycling when no trails are available
I bike a lot in North Nanaimo where there is a significant lack of bike routes. I would have really appreciated knowing which routes would be less packed than, Hammond Bay road, (hint, you can go through the suburbs as a suggested route but it’s not obvious unless you map it yourself. Consider making suggested east west and north south routes from North Nanaimo.

Utilize the existing railway corridor through town by adding a continuous bike trail, add bike lanes to reach university, schools.

Add safe bike parking locations. When planning a short trip into town, it's useful to know where there is a safe place to park at my destination.
