The Country Club Area is a key urban centre within the City of Nanaimo with residential areas, commercial/retail services, and transit connecting to other areas of the city and region. We’re planning a new transit exchange and streetscape improvements to make it safer, more accessible, and inter connected for walking, biking, rolling, and taking transit.

The Country Club Urban Centre Mobility Upgrades project will address necessary infrastructure updates along the Norwell Drive Corridor while exploring opportunities to improve transit facilities and overall mobility in the area.

We are building on a vision! City Plan – Nanaimo ReImagined identifies the Country Club Urban Centre as “a central mobility hub where major mobility networks connect.” The Regional District of Nanaimo’s Transit Redevelopment Strategy identifies opportunities to improve the existing transit exchange and explore alternative locations for the exchange in the Country Club Area. We’ve also heard from the community that safe, accessible, and interconnected mobility options are a priority.

The Country Club Urban Centre Mobility Upgrades project is a direct outcome of these previous planning processes and community input we’ve received so far. Development of the new transit exchange and complete streets improvements on Norwell Drive are key steps towards realizing City Plan’s vision for the area as a central mobility hub.

Study Area and Opportunities

The Country Club Urban Centre Mobility Upgrades study area is focused along Norwell Drive, the transit exchange, and streets surrounding the exchange and Country Club Centre Mall. Refer to the map below for an overview of the project area, key destinations, and potential opportunities.

Project Timeline

The timeline below illustrates the planning process, which was initiated in spring 2024 and is anticipated to be complete by winter 2024. A second round of public engagement is scheduled for the spring of 2025 to refine and confirm project directions based on community input. By summer 2025, we aim to finalize the planning framework that will guide the future detailed design and construction phases.
