UPDATE - MAY 25, 2026

The City of Nanaimo is excited to share that the Bowen Park Disc Golf Course is open for play!

Community engagement work during the design process included signage in the park and this Get Involved webpage. Feedback received helped adjust the design of Holes 1 and 2 to reduce safety concerns, preserve space for all park users, and provide opportunities for environmental protection and restoration. A diagram showing the changes to Holes 1 and 2 is available in the Document Library on this page.

We ask disc golfers to take extra care when playing as everyone adjusts to the new layout and to disc golf activities in new sections of the park. Please be aware of your surroundings and respectful of all others enjoying the park.

Some elements of the project are still in progress and will be completed later this year. These include:

  • A kiosk map and signage at all tee pad posts will be installed this spring.
  • Split rail fencing and tree planting in strategic locations will help define some areas and guide players through the course. This work will take place in summer and fall.
  • Removal of invasive species and restoration planting along the Millstone River and near Holes 15 and 16 will take place in the fall.

Thank you to all park users for your patience during construction.

UPDATE - May 11, 2026

The course will partially open soon! Work on Holes 3 – 18 will be completed by end of day on Friday, May 15th, and will be open for play.

Construction of Holes 1 & 2, and work on signage for the course will continue and are expected to be complete by the month.

UPDATE - March 23, 2026

Construction on the disc golf course will begin on Monday, March 30. The work is expected to take 3-4 weeks and the disc golf course will be closed while work is ongoing. We are looking forward to opening the new and improved course later this spring!

The City of Nanaimo is planning a renewal of the Bowen Park Disc Golf course. The existing course is a popular attraction in Bowen Park, and was originally constructed in the 1990’s.

A new course design was developed in 2025 and is planned to be built in spring 2026. The new design was created in partnership between the City of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Disc Golf Club with the goal of modernizing the course and improving playability. City and Club representatives worked with INdesign Disc Golf, a professional design team that specializes in designing and creating new courses for the sport.

Once complete, the new course will offer players a fresh new challenge to enjoy and will alleviate some safety concerns with the existing course.

This project aims to to improve our communities' wellness and recreation opportunities and fits within Priority Action #154 of Nanaimo ReImagined, the City's guiding document and official community plan.

  • Implement the Sport Tourism Strategy options which include focusing on Indigenous sport, all things cycling, paddling, individual / small sport disciplines, adaptive sport, and sport business.

Feel free to explore the course redesign in the Document Library on this page or submit a question or comment about the project in the Q & A section.
